A short history
Olympics.com says baseball was a demonstration sport before it became a medal event at Barcelona 1992. It stayed on the programme through Beijing 2008, left, and returned at Tokyo 2020.
The same page says baseball and softball were off the programme at Paris 2024 and return at Los Angeles 2028. At the Games, baseball has been the men's event and softball the women's event.

Playoffs
They are playing for the medals. Olympics.com says the men’s tournament returned at Tokyo 2020, and that the host, Japan, won the gold medal.
The published scoreboard for that tournament labels the rounds as opening-round groups, a knockout round, semifinals, a bronze-medal game, and a gold-medal game. The IOC’s note on the federation says the men’s field is six squads.
